Sound Transmission Loss

Test Method
Unless otherwise designated, the measurements reported below were made with all facilities and procedures in explicit conformity with the ASTM Designations E90-97 and E413-87, as well as other pertinent standards. Riverbank Acoustical Laboratories has been accredited by the U.S. Department of Commerce, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) under the National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP) for this test procedure. A description of the measuring technique is available separately. The microphone used was a Bruel & Kjaer serial number 951371.

Description of the Specimen
The test specimen was designated as a steel stud wall with 1/2" fiberboard, 5/8" gypsum board, no insulation. The overall dimensions of the sample as measured were 2.74 m (108 in.) high by 4.27 m (168 in.) wide and 149 mm (5.875 in.) thick. The specimen was constructed in the laboratory’s 2.74 m (9 ft.) by 4.27 m (14 ft.) wood-lined steel frame and was sealed on the periphery (both sides) with a dense mastic. The description of the specimen was as follows: The sample was a steel stud wall assembly that consisted of 92 mm (3.625 in.) steel studs spaced on 610 mm (24 in.) centers and attached to steel top and bottom runners with 13 mm (0.5 in.) S-12 screws. A layer of 13 mm (0.5 in.) thick sound-deadening fiberboard was applied vertically to both sides of the steel studs and attached with 25 mm (1 in.) bugle head drywall screws spaced on 305 mm (12 in.) centers. The fiberboard was covered with a layer of 16 mm (0.625 in.) gypsum board applied vertically with the joints staggered over the fiberboard base layer joints. The gypsum board was attached to the studs with 41 mm (1.625 in.) Type S bugle head drywall screws spaced on 105 mm (12 in.) centers. The cavities between the studs were empty. A visual inspection verified the description of the specimen. The weight of the specimen as measured was 331 kg (729.5 lbs.) an average of 28.3 kg/m2 (5.8 lbs/ft2). The transmission area used in the calculations was 11.7 m2 (126 ft2). The source and receiving room temperatures at the time of the test were 21 C (70±2 F) and 54±2% relative humidity.

Test Results
Sound transmission loss values are tabulated at the eighteen standard frequencies. A graphic presentation of the data and additional information appear on the following pages.
